DOES GENUINE AMERICAN FOOTBALL EXIST IN CHINA?
Founder’s Bowl I – Beijing Guardians vs. Shanghai Nighthawks
Missing Sunday Night Football? Looking for a bit of home during Thanksgiving Day weekend?
The Nighthawks (Shanghai’s first adult tackle American football team) will play host to the Guardians (Beijing’s first American football team) at the NFL’s (National Football League) first-ever NFL Experience in China. The NFL has revolutionized sports leagues in the United States, and professional American football is in fact the number one most-watched sport in the United States. Next step, China.
The inaugural Founder’s Bowl will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Shanghai Sports Center during the allotted time slot of 5:30pm to 7:30pm. 30 Guardian players will square off against 30 Nighthawk players for the Founder’s Trophy. Full gear, helmets and pads, will be worn by all players. The Beijing Guardians will be wearing their black and yellow away jerseys while the Shanghai Nighthawks will wear their white, red and black home jerseys.
Will American football succeed in China–a nation consisting of 20% of the world’s population and that is stereotypically opposed to the physicality of a full-contact sport? You be the judge. The Guardians have been established for over one year and the Nighthawks began their weekly Sunday Gamedays beginning in February of 2011. Ages on each team range from 18 to 35 and members are from China (60%), the USA/Canada (25%), and other various countries (15%).
A post-game celebration will be held Sunday night at 8pm on the 2nd floor of Big Bamboo Sports Bar and Grill in Jing’an. Members of both teams, NFL employees, media and fans will be in attendance.
